Psalm 10 - Just Plain Evil

WARNING !

This is not a "feel good" kind of posting!

The notes in my NIV Study Bible tell me two things about Psalm 1o:
1. It was most likely a continuation of Psalm 9 according to some of the earliest translations and
2. Psalm 10 is a prayer for rescue from the attacks of unscrupulous men (and women).

In Psalm 9 we focused on how we have the choice to live lives of character, values, good attitudes, etc. Today, most of Psalm 10 makes me realize that if good character is a CHOICE, then so is evil.

Back in the 70's (yep, I'm dating myself) the comedian Flip Wilson may have been best known for the saying, "the devil made me do it"!

Well, what do you think!??

Do we choose evil just as we choose good? Or does the forces of evil take over and "the devil make us do it!"

My opinion: WE CHOOSE!!

v. 9 "He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net."
(sounds pretty purposeful to me! )

This is a most depressing chapter! Spewing insults and mocking God, the truly evil person chooses an attitude of arrogance.

v. 6 - He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."

v. 11 - He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."

v. 13 - Why does he say to himself, "he won't call me to account."

I have news!!!

GOD SEES- GOD KNOWS - GOD WILL CALL TO ACCOUNT!!!!

Today, I pray along with the Psalmist:
Arise, LORD!, Lift up your hand O God. Do not forget the helpless. You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth may terrify no more. (12, 17-18)
